Odisha maul Maharashtra by innings and 118 runs

Odisha registered an incredible victory in the ongoing Ranji Trophy Championship, mauling Maharashtra by an innings and 118 runs on the second day of their four-day Group-B match at Krishnagiri Stadium in Wayanad (Kerala) today. This was the second win in seven matches for Odisha, who had posted their first, upsetting Saurashtra by 32 runs last month at Hyderabad.

The historic win against Maharashtra fetched Odisha seven points and elevated them from fifth to third position in the group table with a total of 22 points in their kitty. Odisha now have a good chance of progressing to the quarterfinals and they will play their last league match against Jharkhand at Chennai from December 7 to 10.

The eventful second day of the Odisha-Maharashtra match witnessed the fall of 21 wickets, out of which Odisha pacers claimed 20. Resuming their first innings at the overnight score of 311 for nine, Odisha folded up for 319 and then bundled out Maharashtra for 94 to take a lead of 225. Forced to follow on Maharashtra were once again skittled out for a paltry 107.

Mr Extra turned out to be the top scorer in first innings of Maharashtra, contributing 19 runs. In the second innings they were able to post a three-figure total thanks to 55-run partnership for the eighth wicket between V More and A Sanklecha.

Four players put up outstanding performance in the memorable Odisha win. Allrounder Biplab Samantray, who scored a valuable 89 in their only innings, scalping four wickets in the second innings to be adjudged the Player of the match. Deepak Behera too shone with both bat and ball as he followed his knock of 58 with a match haul of four wickets for 26 runs. Firebrand pacer Suryakant Pradhan was most successful among Odisha bowlers, taking a total seven wickets for 70 runs, while pace spearhead Basant Mohanty finished with a match haul of five for 43.

Earlier, put into bat by Maharashtra captain Swapnil Gugale, Odisha were in dire straits, losing three wickets for 32 runs. But a 98-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Samantray and Behera enabled them bounce back into the game. Displaying excellent application and fighting spirit, Samantray hit a 192-ball 89, which included 11 boundaries. This was the 10th first-class fifty for Samantray, who completed 2,500 runs in the process.

Behera was more aggressive of the duo as he blasted nine fours and two sixes in his 85-ball knock of 58. This was the third firsts-class half-century for Behera, who missed the last match against Karnataka due to injury. Besides Samantray and Behera, Ranjit Singh, Abhishek Yadav and Subhranshu Senapati made notable contributions with the bat. Anupam Sanklecha was most successful bowler for Maharashtra, picking up four wickets for 75 runs.
